Project environment

Giovaninsieme association was borne in 1990 from the initiative of an informal group of 5 youngsters from Catania, persuaded about the needs of this area to gain new chances and opportunities for sociality and cultural grow up.

The area of S. Giovanni Galermo, were the association is settled, has preserved its authentic identity in the last seventeen years.

This area will became the place of the increasing integration between the local reality and the biggest one of the city of Catania.

The main target is create a politic of double requalification: both creating more place for socialising, and changing the role of the quarter of S.Giovanni Galermo, considered until now like a dormitory.

Actually the association is lead by a group of young social workers between 26 and 34 years old, supported by dozen of volunteers, especially young.

Inspired values of all the activities carried out are those of social Christianity, humanism and ecology. The main aim of the association is the non formal education for youngsters and the development of friendly relationships within the area.

The seat of Giovaninsieme is settled in an ancient house in the historical centre of S. Giovanni Galermo, in Calvario street 28-30 near the St. Mother Church.

There is another house completely rebuilt who contains both all the socio-cultural and sprting structure of the association and the bedroom and bathroom of the volunteer.

During the years a sport centre (in which is possible to attend courses of football, volley, athletic), a dance school (classic and modern style), a painting laboratory, a guitar school, a centre for the school mentoring, a gardening course, an hostel, and a leisure club are borne and are still active.

The association also organise educational seminar on cultural and social issues, ecological excursions, international workcamps, cultural exchanges.

The activities are all for free and the members contribute to them without being paid.

Target group are youngsters and children of San Giovanni Galermo, a quarter famous for the high percentage of youngsters unemployment, bad or inexistent social services, a general quality of the life very low and poor.

The association became in the past years a point of reference for the whole local community and the defame of its activity attract even youngster from the centre of the city and from its hinterland, with a multiplier effect due to an important exchange for the communities.

Tasks

Giovaninsieme association, for its engagement in non formal education and social animation, is strongly motivated to host international volunteers coming from cultures and contexts deeply different from the local point of view. In fact the volunteers with their presence and activity will increase the learning of alternative models and the exchange of experiences and they will guide to an European dimension such a closed and isolated society.

The European youngsters otherwise, involved in an educational - learning youth activity can take benefit directly from the projects already realised and from the one they will help to create there.

Especially the presence of the centre with professional Italian teachers that give a free and volunteer service could become a great opportunity to learn Italian language and culture at the best levels..

"Galermo, Europa!" project's aim is to involve the international volunteers in all the main activities carried out by the association.

The general tasks of the volunteers and the main educational activities will concern with the direct relationship with the beneficiaries of the association's programmes, the managing and organisation of local, national and international events, the promotion and management in the school mentoring activities (i.e. sport tournaments or archives and rooms of the reading area).

The co-operation of international and local volunteer is a precious added value from the intercultural point of view. The staff of local volunteers will work in all the activities together and connected with the international one. The tutor will help constantly the volunteer in all the activities and also for their training.

The usual tasks of the young volunteers, in co-operation with the local volunteers, can be divided in:

- Maintenance of the garden and of the other structures

- Opening the school mentoring centre and supporting the after school time activities of the youngest students. In particular the volunteer will receive the customers that wants to use the rooms or the database of the centre helping them in the research and they will support the children in their homework.

- promoting sport and amateur activities trough the promotion and the organisation of teams, football and volleyball tournaments and supporting the teachers of dance-school Choreia.

- Participate to sport tournaments, manifestations and events (i.e. non professionistic tournaments organised every two months)

- Non formal educational activities according to her/his competencies and skills;

- Organisation of exhibitions, events, conferences, daily trips and support in the workcamps and cultural exchange management.

- Project management of brand new activities to launch.

- Promoting and managing conferences, information campaign about sport as a developing tool in social conflicts.

The volunteers involved in the association initiatives will achieve direct and transversal skills.

The direct ones, that can be used in a future, as achieved after the activities with children and the organisation of events, conferences and exhibitions; the transversal ones, as needed in team- work and socio-cultural relations in general, will give them experience in problem-solving, team organisation and social communication

The project can host more EVS volunteers contemporary working in different activities, all monitored by the tutor who will train and help them.

The volunteers will live in some rooms into the structure with all the facilities. It's their choice if they will use the money individually or they will prefer to buy things together

There are not specific rules for the volunteers hosted nearby the association.

Target group

The volunteers to be involved into the project should have a strong interest in youth policies and in social development in general. They have to be aware that the work will be directly concerned with the social animation and continued relationship with the local community, especially with youngsters. Would be useful if they already have attitudes towards arts so that they can teach an share them in all the activities.

Special needs

Unluckily the project is not suitable for volunteers who have some physical problem in order to be able to apply in all the activities and for the lack of structures in the building.
