Youth Culture in Action Network
What is Youth CAN?
Youth CAN (Youth Culture in Action Network) is an international network composed of non governmental and non profit organizations working with and for young people, active in the area of intercultural dialogue.
Youth CAN offers a structure of wider cooperation and representation while protecting organizations' identities.

History
BRITISH COUNCIL & GSM PARTNERSHIP
“Workshop on Definitions”, November 2007
Organizations adopted common concepts related to intercultural dialogue, learnt each other’s approaches and decided to establish a network.
“Advisory Board Meeting”, February 2008
Idea to establish a legally based network in Turkey acting as a bridge for intercultural dialogue
“Training on Networking”, May 2008
Organizations learnt the methodology to establish and operate networks, a Working group of 5 organizations is established to implement the following steps for the establishment of a legally based network.

(August 08 – August 09)
“Working Group Meeting”, November 2008
The WG organizations drafted a Mission Statement and Constitution to be discussed at the Establishment Meeting.
“Youth CAN Establishment Meeting”, January 2009
Organizations discussed and voted the Mission Statement and Constitution of the Network. They signed the statutory documents for the registration in Turkey. An Executive Committee to represent Youth CAN is elected.
“Youth CAN: Turning Point”, April 2009
Organizations now know why they have established this network. This meeting was the first step to work concretely on “how” we will accomplish the common objectives. New project proposals are discussed and the task division is made.

Mission
YOUTH CAN is an international network that concentrates on :
The awareness and understanding of cultural diversity as a wealth
  • linking generations
  • within and beyond borders
Participation of young people as agents of change
  • shaping policies in the formal and non formal educational processes
  • in decision making on communitarian and political levels.
Youth CAN’s perception of cultural diversity is based on the concept of
  • plural, dynamic and multiple identities,
  • the involvement of stakeholders in self reflection,
  • influencing their world vision and attitude to other cultures.

Objectives
Youth CAN’s organizational objectives are to provide :
  • a space of exchange of ideas, expertise, cultural and volunteering projects, common initiatives, partnerships and knowledge;
  • a space for capacity building;
  • a space for advocacy and raising awareness as well as a wider representation at international level in order to achieve greater impact in advocacy;
  • a wider visibility and recognition of activities, approaches and methodologies at international level;
  • technical and sustainable cooperation with like-minded organizations at local, national, regional and international level.

Activities
Youth CAN’s actions include all types of activities, such as
  • cultural and volunteering projects, festivals, work camps, exhibitions, tournaments, advocacy, and awareness raising activities, communication initiatives, visual, artistic and academic activities, research, publications, capacity building, training, seminars, conferences, campaigns,
which contribute to the social and cultural development of young people at local, regional, national and international level, supporting Youth CAN’s objectives.
  • The actions have to be based on or refer to or take into account local communities’ needs.

Youth CAN will draw from the experience and encounter of its members to compare, develop and study aspects such as the following :
  • how to determine a good mix of groups and profiles,
  • what to consider for the prep and evaluation sessions of Youth CAN projects
  • how to train the people responsible for a project on the aspects enhancing chances for intercultural learning and participation,
  • how to prepare / work with the local communities where a project will take place,
  • how to determine the degree of intercultural competence and self confidence of participants and communities in the beginning and how to measure the progress made thanks to the project,
  • how to create an atmosphere of trust, which incites people to open up during a project?
  • How to develop the degree of self confidence and sense of initiative of participants

Profile of Full Members
  • Disposing of a legal personality in the country where they are registered and prove that its activities and objectives are proper to the Constitution,
  • Empowering young people and promoting intercultural dialogue,
  • Organizing projects at local, regional, national and/or international level;
  • Supporting the development of young people through nonformal and/or formal education;
  • Being transparent on financing, decision-making and outcomes;
  • Continuity in democratic functioning and organizational capacity.

Profile of Observers
Institutions, agencies and other structures, not eligible for full membership, which have an interest in the working areas of the association and which can support activities and functioning of the association, can obtain observer status.

Next Steps of Youth CAN
Registration in Turkey before the national authorities
First General Assembly ( June 2009)
Upcoming projects :
  • ICU Everyday : A two year project to build capacities of Youth CAN and develop own approach and materials,
  • Youth CAN Speak : an e-magazine developed by young people from various countries (YiA),
  • Come and : An international youth carneval in Liverpool where young people will prepare performances on the spot (YiA and private financing)
  • Living in peace : A dialogue project between Cyprus, Greece and Turkey including pax from other conflict areas, focusing on the individual processes of intercultural understanding (YiA and EYF).
