IBG01  Muehlausen   Thuringia   07.04 - 25.04   ENVI

Project: The local host is a charity organisation running workshops and schools for disabled. They have been hosting workcamps for many years now. Former workcamps got a very warm welcome and were a big success – it always meant a great experience for all volunteers and inhabitants of the place.
Work
: Around a new residence for disabled people the garden has to be arranged and the workcamp will help with it. At the moment there is just a field, but there is a concept to transform it into a nice garden to enjoy it in summertime. The project means working in all weathers. There will be heavy and easy tasks to do, so every volunteer should find suitable work. Professionals will supervise the work and explain it.

Accommodation: The group will be living in a cosy, yellow house on the property of the charity organisation next to the buildings of the workshops. Kitchen, sleeping rooms and sanitary facilities are provided – and much more. There is a big garden around the house with grass, trees, a pond and a barbecue grill. Next to the workshops you can also find a soccer field. On the roof of the house there is balcony from where you have a great sight on the landscape around. Muehlhausen provides a lot of shopping possibilities and is easily reachable on foot or by bike.
Location: Muehlhausen is a very old German town with about 50.000 inhabitants. Visiting the city centre and looking at the old houses you can still imagine how Germany must have been in former times. Muehlhausen is situated in the beautiful forest of Thuringia . Nearby are many interesting places like the city Weimar (home of the poets Schiller and Goethe) or the Wartburg where Martin Luther translated the new testament of the bible. There are also many other nice places to go for an excursion.

Next airport: Leipzig
Next train station: Muehlhausen (Thueringen)

Carmarthenshire, located in the Southwest of the country, is known as ‘The Garden of Wales’ for its beautiful countryside, which reaches from the rugged coastline of Carmarthenshire Bay in the south, to the Black Mountain region of the Brecon Beacons in the east and the gentle hills of Pembroke to the West. Caerfyrddin (or Carmarthen, in English) is the county’s largest town, and the legendary birthplace of Myrddin, the wise magician of Welsh folklore, better known as Merlin, the wizard of Arthurian legend.
This project is hosted by Carmarthenshire County Council. One of the Council’s obligations is to encourage access to the countryside and to maintain areas of the countryside, footpaths and country parks.
The group leaders for the project will be MTVs (medium term volunteers) who will be staying in Carmarthenshire for around four months and assisting with several international projects.
Volunteers will carry out practical environmental tasks alongside professional contractors. Most of the work will involve making improvements to public access in the park (i.e. improving and developing footpaths), creating picnic areas and information points, and also clearing scrub for reforestation. The work will be physical, outdoors and may be in unpleasant conditions such as rain, wind and mud (even in summer). There will be full days of work (09.00-17.00) so volunteers may become tired and sore, and should be prepared to work hard!
The area volunteers will be working in is a site called Alltnant-y-ci. It is an old open cast mine that has now been reclaimed as an environmental area for the local community. Volunteers will be helping to clear it create footpaths, bridges and gazebos and also help build the mountain bike trail and bridleways. The site will also be used as a place for exercise facilities for older people and people with disabilities and volunteers will be involved in the construction of these facilities.
Volunteers may also participate in some global education activities with children and young people in schools and youth centres around Carmarthenshire. these activities will be informal sessions and will concentrate on volunteers giving these young people some information about where they come from and running activities with them. Volunteers might like to think about activities or games from their own countries that they might be able to contribute to these sessions – for example a national dance, simple songs, children’s games, arts and crafts activities etc. The group of MTVs (medium term volunteers) staying in Carmarthenshire will help to lead these activities.
The group will be living and working in a beautiful part of Wales where there are many hills, beaches and castles. There will also be plenty of opportunities to hear Welsh being spoken as many local people have it as their first language. Welsh is one of the oldest languages in Europe and belongs to the Celtic language tree. It is still spoken by approximately 20% of the population.

Accommodation: The group will live in the Glanaman youth resource centre, staying in dormitory accommodation. The group will cook for themselves in the kitchen in the centre. The centre also has two bathrooms, a washing machine, a pool table and internet access. Glanaman itself is a small town but there is a post office, a couple of small shops and a pub.

Special remarks: Volunteers should bring strong steel toe capped boots for working, a waterproof jacket and trousers, as well as plenty of warm clothing, since they will be working outside in all weather conditions. It is quite cold in Wales during the winter – so please come prepared!
Volunteers are also asked to be flexible with regards to the sort of work they do as some of the environmental tasks may vary slightly from the initial project description.

  • working in the garden

  • cleaning path around the Convent in the wonderful Regional Park of Sirente-Velino.
